Brial elected to assembly

MATA’UTU – Voters in Wallis and Futuna have elected Sylvain Brial as their new member of the French National Assembly.

Preliminary results show he won 51.6 per cent of the votes, defeating the incumbent Napole Polutele.

The election was called two months ago after the constitutional court in Paris had found that 21 proxy votes cast for Mr Polutele were irregular, which deprived him of his slim majority.

Mr Polutele retained his seat in June, but his victory was challenged by Mr Brial.
