RUSILA Bulou Wati was still trying to recover from her husband’s death when she lost her only grandchild in an unfortunate incident at Vuwai settlement in Namara, Tailevu on Friday.

Her grandson Rayasi Tulave allegedly drowned after falling into a well, a few metres away from their home.

“I lost my husband a year ago and it has been hard for me,” said the 46-year-old.

“I am still trying to recover from that and now I have to face the death of my only grandchild again. It’s heartbreaking.

“We just came back from the farm on Friday when my grandson went to play with some children just nearby, that was around 5pm and 15 minutes later, my daughter found his body floating in the well.

“Rayasi is the son of my youngest child and also my first grandchild. I still can’t believe that we have to lose him this way.

“His father was shocked to hear the news and we were looking forward to celebrating his second birthday in August. We hope to make arrangements for his burial once the post-mortem examination was completed.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the circumstances surrounding the child’s death was under investigation.

The drowning toll stands at 18 compared with 21 for the same period last year.
