Boy, 6, drowns in river

THE drowning death toll has now increased to 33 compared with 32 for the same period last year after a six-year-old became the country’s latest drowning victim.

The incident happened at 4.30pm on Saturday when the kindergarten student had accompanied a 29-year-old for a swim in the Wainibuka River in Tailevu.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said attempts to revive the young boy were unsuccessful.

“He was conveyed to the Nayavu Health Centre where he was unfortunately pronounced dead,” Ms Naisoro said.

“A post-mortem examination will be conducted soon as investigations continue,” she said.
