Boy, 10, latest road victim, driver in custody

POLICE are investigating the death of a 10-year-old boy who was hit by a bus driven by a 40-year-old man on Saturday at Wainisarava in Namosi.

“The driver, who is in custody, was heading towards Suva from Naraiyawa Village when the alleged incident occurred at Wainisarava, where the boy is alleged to have ran across the road,” Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said.

“The victim was rushed to the Navunikabi Health Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.”

The road death toll currently stands at 13 compared with 15 for the same period last year.

Meanwhile, police officers in the Southern Division foiled a robbery heist at a major fast food chain after the arrest of five men believed to have been planning the crime.

Ms Naisoro said the division’s taskforce members intercepted a vehicle in Valelevu and questioned the two occupants acting in a suspicious manner and found the two allegedly in possession of house breaking implements.

“The two were taken in for questioning where they revealed their alleged plan of breaking into the popular fast food restaurant early Thursday morning,” she said.

“They also revealed the alleged involvement of other men whereby officers were deployed and arrested the remaining suspects.”

All five are still in police custody as investigations continue.
