Bowlers pit skills

BOWLS Fiji will announce the names of the bowlers at the end of the month for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

The bowlers met at the Suva Bowling Club over the weekend to attend the second national trials.

Chairman of the national selectors, Som Padayachi said bad weather in the Capital City was one of the negative factors for them.

“It was our second trials for the Commonwealth Games which will be held next year,” he said.

“We are in the second round of the trials after the first one was held at the Nadi Sports and Social Club in Nadi two weeks ago,” he said.

“We started the trials on Saturday as we could only manage to have a half-a-day trial because the other half was washed out by the heavy rain. We could not continue the trials.

“We will have another set of trials in Nadi in a couple of weeks time and that may be the last trial for bowling.”

Bowlers Arun Kumar, Ratish Lal, Abdul Kalim, Radhika Prasad, Litia Tikoisuva and Surendra Prasad, who won the National Bowls Singles competition in October, were battling for a top five place in the men’s and women’s team.

“The responses are good since they are the cream of bowlers. The bowlers are trying to catch the momentum. We are trying to select a very good team for the games.”

Meanwhile, bowling will not be played in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games because of the unavailability of the grounds.
