THE 14th Raj Charan National Singles Championship begins today at the Suva Bowling Club with more than 40 top bowlers ready to compete.
Suva Bowling Club president Samuela Tuikiligana said they were looking forward to compete in one of their long running tournaments commemorating a former professional athlete.
“This year has been challenging, but we are expecting high profile games this weekend as we remember one of our former colleagues of the sport,” Tuikiligana said.
The championship sponsored by the Raj Charan family is offering a prize purse of $1000.
Nadi’s Rajinesh Prasad will defend the men’s division while Suva’s Losalini Tukai will defend the women’s division.
Games co-oridinator Martin Fong said they were expecting a great day of competition.
“We have 30 men’s players and 18 women’s players registered for the event and hope we will have great weather for a great weekend of bowls,” Fong said.
The late Raj Charan was a former Fiji Sugar Corporation accountant who dedicated more than 30 years of his life to bowls as a player, national representative, national team manager and also president of Bowls Fiji.
