New Fiji 7s captain Josua Vakurinabili has a huge responsibility on his shoulders.

The seasoned 7s rugby campaigner and Olympic Games gold medallist, shoulders the burden of steering Fiji forward when the World Rugby Sevens Series resumes in Dubai this weekend.

Vakurinabili, a young chief from the Nadroga Province, last night led a new look Fijian side in the pool games of the men’s competition.

For the Vatukarasa man, the role of captain is crucial. Fiji played France and Canada last night, and Australia this morning.

The Wardens Rugby Club player and Fiji Corrections Service staff, said leading the Fiji 7s team was a challenge.

“I will try my best to deliver as the competition is expected to be tough in Dubai,” he said.

Vakurinabili and policeman Waisea Nacuqu are the survivors from the Gareth Baber-coached gold medal Tokyo Olympic Games winning team.

“Leadership comes with responsibilities and I am grateful that I had been taught the key values of how to lead by my father, Ratu Luke Vidovi before he passed on.

“This is an opportunity for me to prove that I can lead my team to victory. Something that I learned from my father was a good leader prioritises the welfare of his people. I will do my best for the team, the country and my family. On the rugby field, it’s all about encouragement and getting the players together. My role as a captain is to get seven players to think and play like they are one unit.”

Vakurinabili has been part of the Fiji 7s team since 2016 and has learned from some of the best in the code including former coaches Ben Ryan, Baber, and 7s icon Waisale Serevi, Pio Tuwai and Jerry Tuwai.

“I started off as a rookie in 2016 and we had Osea Kolinisau, Pio Tuwai, Kalione Nasoko and Jerry Tuwai, who have taught me a lot about leadership and how to lead a great team.

“I ask fans for support and pray for us as we head into our first outing in the series after two years.”
