Boost for Team Fiji

FIJI National Sports Commission handed a cheque for $1791,547 to Team Fiji for their 2018 Commonwealth Games campaign in Gold Coast, Australia next month.

Commission chairman Peter Mazey made the presentation to the Team Fiji deputy chef de mission Christopher Yee at the Fiji Olympic House in Suva yesterday.

In a breakdown of the particulars, $1.124 million was provided for the preparation while about $667000 was for the participation towards Team Fiji for the Commonwealth Games.

“I thought it was an opportune time to get together with the deputy chef de mission and FASANOC to let everyone know the contribution the commission and the Government has given to Team Fiji,” Mazey said.

“It has been a good year with the number of sports who would be representing the country.

“We have got quite a large preparation budget for all the teams being allocated through FASANOC from the FNSC to every athlete. The commission is extremely proud of the team which we are sending this year and it looks great.”

Yee speaking on behalf of the FASANOC thanked the Government for their support towards the competition. “The funding itself has allowed the 12 sports to prepare themselves well and that are sports which includes athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, boxing, lawn ball, netball, rugby 7s men and women, shooting, sqaush, swimming, table tennis and weight-lifting,”Yee said.

Team Fiji departs for Commonwealth Games today.
