Black Caps eye more spinners

AUCKLAND – Legspinner Ish Sodhi has been called into the New Zealand one-day cricket squad as an extra spin option for the series opener against Australia in Auckland.

Today’s match is being played on the same Eden Park strip used on Sunday for New Zealand’s three-wicket win over Pakistan, whose spinners were able to get assistance.

Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum says the playing 11 against Australia will be confirmed on the morning of the game after the team had looked at the conditions. He said Sodhi was drafted in because New Zealand wanted to have the option of using an additional slow bowler.

“We just saw the wicket the other day was a little slow, to be honest,” he said.

“There is potential that we would include him if we think that the wicket is going to hold up.”

McCullum admitted the pitch provided more turn at the weekend than expected.
