National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad has urged Fiji to make its own decision at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) meeting in Glasgow, Scotland and not be influenced by any major country.

He made the comments after confirmation yesterday that Australia has “reached out across the Pacific” and “is committed to supporting Pacific Island nations’ role” at COP26.

This newspaper had sent questions to the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, John Feakes yesterday, asking him if the Australian government is paying for airline costs of COP26 Pacific delegates out of Nadi?

“Australia has reached out across the Pacific to assess country needs and potential barriers to in-person participation at COP26,” read a statement from the High Commission.

“Australia is committed to supporting Pacific Island nations’ role at the forefront of global advocacy on climate change at the COP26 conference in Glasgow.”

The NFP leader said while it was Australia’s right to assist Pacific partners, this assistance shouldn’t come with conditions.

“We hope there are no strings attached and that Fiji and other countries will make their own decisions at COP26,” said Prof Prasad.

“We haven’t seen a list of people from Fiji going to Glasgow and what agenda they are taking.”

The Pacific delegates left Nadi yesterday afternoon.
