Billiards ranking championship series

A series of rankings championships will be held to lift the level of billiards in the country.

Billiards & Snooker Association of Fiji (BSAF) hosted its first National Billiards Rankings Championship last weekend which was won by Deepak Jai Ram at the Nausori Club.

BSAF president Riffat Bhatti said the aim was to improve billiards here and create more interest in the sport.

Bhatti said coaching courses would be conducted.

“The sport of billiards is weak in Fiji,” he said.

“That is why for the first time we have introduced rankings events for it.

“There will be three coaching courses conducted this year and expatriates will be coming from abroad to guide our players.

“Our academy will be opening soon.

“Also once the Oceania academy is ready in Adelaide, Australia then we will send our players there for training camps,” Bhatti added.

Meanwhile the BSAF has released its calendar for 2016 with a total of 10 tournaments to be staged in the next seven months.

The highlight of the season will be the snooker carnival which will be held on the Fiji Day long weekend in October.

During the carnival, the Fiji International Open, the Golden Oldies and the Fiji International under-21 Championships will be played.

Many overseas players are expected to participate during the carnival which will be staged at the Nausori Club, Fiji Club and Merchants Club.
