Bhatti is new billiards and snooker president

BUSINESSMAN Riffat Bhatti is back at the helm of the Billiards and Snooker Association of Fiji.

Bhatti takes over from Praveen Maharaj, who resigned as president because of work commitments.

Ironically it was Maharaj who defeated Bhatti during the elections earlier this year.

An emergency meeting was held at the Lautoka Club on Saturday where Bhatti was appointed on an interim basis to lead the body until the special general meeting next month.

Bhatti, the Carz & Carz Fiji managing director said he was glad to be back to lead.

He said under the constitution the committee members had the power to appoint an interim- president. “We had the meeting in Lautoka and the committee requested me to run the association,” Bhatti said.

“Now the special general meeting will be held during the Fiji Day long weekend in Suva. This will coincide with the Fiji International tournament.”

Bhatti is also the president of the Southern Billiards and Snooker Association.

The main task for Bhatti in this short term will be to organise a successful Fiji International.

Bhatti said he would contest for the top position during the special general meeting.

“Hopefully I will get elected again and take the sport to the next level,” he said.

“If I get selected then I will relinquish the position as president of the Southern body. I hope to get the full backing of the members this time.

“The response for the Fiji International is very good. There are more than 15 players coming over from Canada. There will be several from Australia and New Zealand as well.”

The Fiji International will feature the veterans division also.
