Better understanding to reduce food import bill

DEVELOPING a better understanding of Fiji’s fresh produce demands for the tourism sector could reduce the food import bill and provide economic benefits for the country.

This was the message from Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association president Dixon Seeto at the opening of HOTEC 2018 at the Denarau Convention Centre, Nadi, yesterday.

“This year in partnership with the ministries of tourism and agriculture, we also recognise that a better understanding of our fresh produce demands for tourism could potentially reduce our imports and food costs,” he said.

“This could provide farmers with greater economic benefits that would also spread the tourism dollar further in Fiji.

“We hope that focusing on improving the processes from farm to plate will assist all levels of the supply chain.”

Mr Seeto said through trade shows such as HOTEC, suppliers, buyers, chefs, farmers and visitors coming to the trade show could gain a better insight and make more informed decisions, improve standards and increase networking opportunities.

Mr Seeto said this year’s event was the 15th trade show.
