BE PREPARED! Fiji Met issues heavy rain and strong wind warning

Listen to this article:

The Fiji Meteorological Service is monitoring a low-pressure system to the northwest of the country which has “some potential to develop into a tropical disturbance.”

The weatherman says the system “has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone until Monday.”

A Heavy Rain Alert is now in force for the Northern Division and Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau and Lomaiviti Groups of islands.

Rain and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls are likely from later tomorrow over these areas and this is expected to spread over the rest of the country from Sunday.

From Sunday, strong southeast winds are expected to develop over the land areas of Yasawa Group, coastal areas from Sigatoka to Suva to Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby  smaller islands, Lau Group, Lomaiviti Group, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua, Cakaudrove and eastern Macuata.

A Strong Wind Warning is in force for all Fiji Waters.

Fiji Met says people could expect localised flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, localised flooding of minor roads, Irish crossings and bridges with some disruption to  traffic flow.

The weatherman says people should expect poor visibility out at sea as well as on land with increased risk of motor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads.
