Daughters being disciplined by their brothers, a trend common among iTaukei families has to stop, because it could later lead to domestic violence says The People’s Alliance party provisional candidate Lavenia Kaumaitotoya.

She said this to as many as 50 women vendors of the Nadi Municipal Market who attended the Fiji Day, Diwali and International Day of Rural Women celebrations recently.

“As mothers, especially iTaukei mothers, we are always good at getting our sons to discipline our daughters, however, we have to stop doing that,” she said.

She encouraged women vendors to be more proactive in their role as mothers and see what positive changes they could bring about in the lives of their children.

“We need to encourage our sons to treat their sisters as queens and princesses because then only, they will treat their wives as such.

“Otherwise when they grow up, they will end up disciplining their girlfriends, wives leading to domestic violence,” she said. Ms Kaumaitotoya said as mothers they had to monitor their children “like eagles”.

“The change starts with us and as mothers we have the power to inculcate discipline in our children for their bright future ahead.”
