“Nothing is impossible when you believe in God and yourself to achieve your dream.”

Those were the words of 17-year-old Philip Baselala who hails from Solotavui, Kadavu.

“I am blessed to be given the opportunity to wear the national jersey. I know the road doesn’t end there. My plan is to one day wear the white jersey and proudly represent my country,” Baselala said.

“For me, come 2022, I am working on my endurance, my stamina and most of all my individual skills.”

Baselala attends Suva Grammar School and is part of the Swire Shipping Fiji Warriors.

Baselala said being part of the Fiji Warriors was a challenge, having to play against those from other schools who had different backgrounds.

“There is a lot of talent in the squad and for me, I know there will be competition, but in order to achieve your dream, your goal, have faith in yourself and trust the process.”

The nippy half-back said having the support from his family and friends was what pushed him to play rugby.

“My elder brother and my cousin are both part of the under 20 squad and I am blessed to have them because they always help me, guide me and most of all we all train together. It’s a family affair to have us playing and our families come out and support us so I am grateful.”

(This article corrects Philip Baselala’s age in the second paragraph; he played for Fiji Warriors; and his brother and cousin are part of the Fiji U20 squad)
