THE ANZ outrigger canoe team won the first Tafaga Outrigger Canoe Club business house regatta competition held at the National Sailing Centre at Laucala Bay yesterday.
ANZ captain Susau Yam said winning the competition was a huge achievement for them.
“We are overjoyed and overwhelmed, we would like to thank ANZ for sponsoring and paying for our registration fees and for allowing us to take part in the event,” Yam said.
She also thanked the organisers for coming up with such an event and keeping people involved at the same time to promote the sport.
Twelve business house teams braved the wet weather and took to the National Sailing Centre which was an encouraging sight for event organisers.
Tafaga Outrigger Canoe Club president Rachael Elaise said the competition was held for the purpose of encouraging healthy living and connecting them with the ocean. It is a great team sport and a good team building sport. We are encouraging business houses to come out and paddle and we are encouraging a lot more people to join us in paddling,” Elaise said.
She said this was the first time for a club such as Tafaga to be hosting an event on its own. Elaise also confirmed they would be having the event every year after yesterday’s event.
