THE Lautoka Market Vendors Association is calling on business houses to support them in their effort to totally phase out the use of single-use plastic bags at the Lautoka Municipal Market.

Association secretary Filomena O’Neil said a concerted effort was needed to eradicate the use of single-use plastic bags. Her comments came in light of yesterday’s distribution of eco-bags by HFC Bank to more than 100 vendors.

“Most of us vendors are now selling our products together with the 50 cents plastic bags and a lot of people are buying them,” Ms O’Neil said.

“It would have been better if we are also given eco-bags to sell together with our products and this is one way we can totally phase out the use of plastic bags.

“We would like to thank HFC Bank for showing their support towards this initiative and we do hope more business organisations will support us by providing eco-bags.”

Ms O’Neil said such an initiative needed the effort of every stakeholder to work together and eradicate the use of single-use plastic bags which was harmful for the environment.
