BAMBOO has a lot of potential and maybe just the next big thing in the local art market.

The only connoisseur of bamboo crafts by Veronika Lawakeli included bamboo vases, earrings and necklaces which were displayed at yesterday’s Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata Handicraft Show.

The 48-year-old mother of two and Solevu native in Bua was proud of her crafts, saying they were fresh to the local market and that she had learnt the art from a workshop in her village.

“I found it interesting because no one else back in Bua has ever tried to make crafts from bamboo and I don’t regret giving it a try because it is quite a hit,” she said.

“The bamboos I use is cooked in a brine solution before it is sunned and filed for smoothness and varnished before it is sprayed with gold tints to give the finish.”

Another emerging artisan, Iva Adinaica from Wailevu East, Cakaudrove displayed her local Christmas creations at the show which were made from brushes and dead tree branches.

Meanwhile the craft show also included a fashion show which was graded in two categories. namely the contemporary and traditional shows.
