Former prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s position of Fiji Rugby Union president will be up for election during the rugby governing body’s annual general meeting in April.
This was confirmed by FRU acting chief executive officer Tevita Tuiloa following their special general meeting at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on Saturday.
The meeting was attended by the 24 affiliated unions from around the country.
“Mr Bainimarama is still the president of Fiji Rugby Union. That was a position the unions had given to him as a person, it was not based on him being the former prime minister,” Tuiloa said.
“The position will be coming up for reappointment or election in the April annual general meeting.”
Tuiloa said under Bainimarama’s leadership, Fiji rugby had grown to where it now has a Super Rugby team.
“I think he has done a good job together with the current board. We didn’t have a Drua team before, we didn’t have an active women’s competition before, we didn’t have contracted players in the sevens and fifteens program – so all these changes are really because of these people at the governance level driving that direction.
“For me coming in now and with this board, we would like to stand on the shoulders of the work of those people and move up.”
Tuiloa said there were also a number of appointments on the FRU board were due to take place during the AGM.
