Bainimarama, Qiliho trial | Not guilty, says court

Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and suspended police commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho have been found not guilty by Suva Magistrate Seini Puamau.

Mr Bainimarama and Mr Qiliho were alleged to have interfered in a police investigation into claims of financial mismanagement at the University of the South Pacific by senior university executives.

Mr Bainimarama was charged with a count of attempt to pervert the course of justice while Mr Qiliho was charged with a count of abuse of office.

According to their charge sheet, it was alleged that Mr Bainimarama sometime in July 2020 as the Prime Minister directed Mr Qiliho to stop the investigation into a police complaint, in the abuse of the authority of his office, which was an arbitrary act prejudicial to the rights of the University of the South Pacific which is the complainant.
