On this day in 1983, The Fiji Times published on its front page the story of a firing incident at a widow’s home in Vunimoli, Labasa.
Police was investigating the incident where shots were fired at 39-year-old Raj Wati’s home, and she had claimed to Police that she was attacked because she had rejected an offer of marriage from a relative after her husband’s death three years prior.
While the story mentions finding of pellets that were sent for analysis to Suva, the RFMF Commander at that time, then Colonel Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, had said that soldiers in Lebanon did not use bullets similar to the pellets fired at Vunimoli.
