FIJI 7s head coach Gareth Baber has said that despite a slow start, the team was still more than capable of winning tournaments.

Fiji had yet to register a tournament win this season after finishing ninth at the HSBC World Rugby Series Dubai 7s tournament and runner-up at the Oceania Rugby Sevens in Suva last month.

“We know how to win tournaments and we haven’t lost perspective of that,” Baber said.

“We won the series last year and we have an understanding of how that can go and it’s now a part of making sure we get it right this week.”

Going into the Cape Town 7s, a serious focus has also been on discipline after Fiji copped six yellow cards in four games during the previous tournament.

“It wasn’t good enough last weekend and the players have been told it wasn’t good enough.

“When we were down to six, we conceded tries and the six players left had to work much harder and there is a responsibility on the players to know when they are tempted to and do actions that result in yellow cards not only hurts us in terms of points but also the workload.

“We got three games ahead and that is where we want to challenge ourselves.”
