RUGBY players in Yasawa have an opportunity this weekend to showcase their talents and convince Fiji Airways Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber for a spot in the national 7s team.

Baber will be present at this year’s Sat Patrick Vuaki 7s this weekend in an effort to scout and identify new talents.

Fiji 7s rep Kalione Nasoko was identified by former coach Ben Ryan during a 7s tournament in Nacula, Yasawa, few years ago.

Baber, who was also present at last year’s event, will use the tournament to identify untapped talents.

Tournament co-ordinator Pete Leko said the presence of Baber would lift the standard of the competition “Players would be out to impress the coach,” Leko said.

He said most players had been inspired by the achievements of some fellow islanders who were plucked from the islands to join the national team.

Yasawa islanders who had made their names in international rugby included Kaiava “Yasawa Baraccuda” Salusalu, 2005 Rugby Sevens World Cup winner Jone Daunivucu (Vuaki Village), Fiji 7s reps Nasoko and France-based Eroni “Sledgehammer” Sau (Marou Village).

“We have abundance of talents in the islands, but we lack the exposure,” said Leko.

“We believe the presence of Baber this weekend will motivate these island players to fully utilise their God-given talents. We thank Baber for availing himself this weekend.”

Leko said the objective of the tournament was to raise money for the development of the school and the St Parish Church.

He said 32 teams would compete for the $5000 top prizemoney.
