Baber continues search for series captain

FIJI Airways 7s coach Gareth Baber continues to look for the best national 7s captain in the lead-up to the 2017-2018 World Rugby Sevens Series.
He has been rotating the skipper’s role among some members of the national squad in past internationals Fiji had competed in. This weekend in the Silicon 7s in the United States of America, Baber has appointed Jasa Veremalua as the captain.
Olympic Games gold medallist Veremalua is the third player to captain the national 7s team this year after the departure of former skipper Osea Kolinisau.
Baber appointed Paula Dranisinukula to lead the national side in the Munich 7s in Germany while playmaker Jerry Tuwai, last week led the team in the Central Coast 7s in Australia.
“In terms of captaincy, Veremalua comes with an obvious experience. There are some new players going to the Silicon Valley as well. We need someone for them to rely on and someone they can look up to and Jasa is all that,” Baber said.
He said Veremalua was an ideal choice because of how he played and the manner he carried himself on the field.
“The way he plays the game is very similar to his character. He is very honest when he is on the field and he works hard. He has a great skill level and he works hard. It would be good to see the players learning off him.”
He said the Hideaway Hurricanes prop earlier showed his capability of leading a team because of his leadership characters on and off the field.
“We strongly need to have an individual who leads the group and to be effective, they need to have good talents around them. With the captaincy, you don’t want them to change the way they play simply because they can. There are several strong candidates at the moment,” Baber said.
