The Fiji Roads Authority should take the blame in the slowdown of road infrastructure across the country, says Unity party leader Savenaca Narube.

The former governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji was responding to the decision by China Railway No.5 Engineering Group Fiji Ltd to send 20 workers home because “there is not much work to be done”.

In an interview, company human resource assistant Arieta Tavele said there was a need to hire responsible workers. In response, Mr Narube said the company’s decision was made with very good reasons.

He said FRA should be questioned.

“The slowdown in the infrastructure work is a reflection of the deepening cash crisis in government,” he claimed.

“Government, as I predicted, is not collecting its budgeted revenue for this year.

“As they have been doing all along, Government inflates revenue to hide the real deficit.

“Political convenience is destroying our financial position.

“As I have predicted, the Government will have to borrow more this year to add to the escalating debt that we are amassing.

“The China Railway incident is yet another evidence of the poor project management of the FRA that have drained $2 billion in the last five years with very little to show for it.”

FRA chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said the China Railway’s decision was inappropriate as there was work to be done.
