The Australian Government remains committed to assisting efforts of countering cybercrime.

Australian High Commissioner to Fiji John Feakes said this while handing over the first set of 4,500 branded T-shirts to Fijian stakeholders including the Fiji Police Force, Online Safety Commission and the World Wide Web Foundation to enhance cyber-safety security awareness in the Pacific through the Cyber Safety Pasifika (CSP).

“This is an emerging problem in both our countries and something both our Governments prioritize and I congratulate you all on this collaboration,” Mr Feakes said.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) Senior Liaison Officer Detective Superintendent Adrian Morton said the positive outcome was a great example of the Pacific coming together to combat a universal problem.

“We don’t face this as a people of Fiji or Australia or other nations, we face this as citizens of the world and people of the Blue Pacific.”

The Online Safety Commissioner Anne Dunn-Baleilevuka commended the achievement noting the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

“Cybercrime is a people’s issue and with October being cyber-security month, we need to engage and reach out to people as online safety is not just an issue that is dealt with by one type of community”.

Speaking on behalf of the Fiji Police Force, Senior Superintendent of Police Seru Neiko said as law enforcement stakeholders, they have a duty to ensure the internet is safe and serves the purpose for which it was designed.

SSP Neiko said online activity had increased during the pandemic and the onus was on  stakeholders to continuously find avenues of working together to strengthen cyber-security defenses and ensure communities are made aware about cyber safety.

The Fijian designed t-shirts will be distributed throughout PICP countries.

Cyber Safety Pasifika is an initiative of the PICP led by Australian Federal Police operating throughout the Pacific to increase cyber safety awareness and assists in upskilling Pacific Police officers in cybercrime investigations.

Last year, PICP countries were invited to design online safety branded T-shirts with the Fiji Police Cyber Crime Unit’s design picked as the winner.
