The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is anticipating more than 50 per cent of the targeted adult population to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by the end of this month.

Head of Fiji’s vaccination taskforce Dr Rachel Devi said August would be a big month for vaccination.

“The target that Dr Fong announced some time ago, we’ve definitely passed the 80 per cent for first doses only, but definitely we’re looking forward to crossing  that 90 per cent,” she said.

“We need individuals to be fully vaccinated to be protected.

“We started the mass roll-out around May, June and we haven’t stopped since then. So anticipating August will be a big month for us.

“We will have a lot of people coming in for their second jabs, like hundreds and thousands. So anticipating the second dose to literally group up significantly this month.

“We may anticipate as high as 50, more than 50 per cent but I guess this is now up to people to come in and get the second jabs when they are due.

“We should see a good number of second jabs also from the Moderna vaccine because the duration, the timeframe is very small, like 28 days compared with AstraZeneca so that’s another difference that will make to the whole vaccination program.”
