NATIONAL football coach Christophe Gamel will return to France at the end of the month after stepping down from his position.

Gamel made the announcement yesterday citing personal reasons at the Fiji Football Association headquarters in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

“It was a wonderful moment,” Gamel said after describing his time with Fiji football.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said although attempts had been made to retain Gamel, family would come first and the association wished him all the best for the near future.

The Frenchman joined Fiji football as coach in 2016 replacing the sacked Frank Farina of Australia.

The 47-year-old has a  diverse background in European football, playing semiprofessionally for various French and Italian clubs
while coaching youth football teams, before receiving his UEFA Pro-Licence and moving up into international coaching
with the Qatar under-17 and under-19 national teams before joining Fiji.

Gamel will remain with the association until August 30.
