Fijian athletes Banuve Tabakaucoro, Eugene Vollmer and Heleina Young have stepped up training in Australia to try and qualify for the Olympic Games in Japan.
The trio are training in Brisbane to see who is going to represent Fiji in Tokyo next month.
Team Fiji chef de mission to the games, Patrick Bower said the race was among the three, especially Tabakaucoro and Vollmer, whose names had been sent for clarification to select the best athlete top represent Fiji.
“They have one place available for them to go to the Olympic Games as there will be one athlete from athletics,” Bower said.
“Their names and the results of their performances had been presented to the selection justification commission two nights ago and that results will be tabled by the FASANOC executive board tomorrow (today) to endorse the selection made by the commission.
“Afterwards we will know who will be the athlete to go to Tokyo.” Vollmer said they had been training hard in Australia.
“Following our checkout from quarantine, Banuve and I had our first ever workout on Monday since checking out of quarantine.
For me, it would be my final hard lifting session before competing on Friday evening at Runaway Bay.
I believe Banuve has one more gym session but he has yet to confirm with coach Sharon Hannan.”
