Athletes from remote areas

IT WAS highlighted in the media how athletes from some of the maritime and rural schools had to struggle to fundraise to meet their transportation cost to enable their participation in the Coca-Cola Games.

To add to their woes most of them do not have access to training facilities that are available to schools in urban centres.

I thought under the new policy schools were not allowed to engage in fundraising activities.

However, given the importance of sports in the development of our children I would like to suggest that special allocation should be made in the grants for remote-based schools to cater for such expenses. Perhaps the sponsors could also consider setting aside some funds as part of their contribution to assist these schools in the future. After all its all about promoting the sports in the country.
