Young people are feeling the brunt of the COVID-19 crisis, and some are attempting to take their lives because they are unable
to make sense of what is happening around them.

This was the view expressed by Empower Pacific chief executive officer Patrick Morgam.

He said his organisation had been fielding calls from young people between the ages of 18 and 26 who were facing mental health issues.

“This is a grave concern for young people and the issue should not be overlooked,”

Mr Morgam said. He said many expressed difficulties in sleeping, lack of appetite, suicidal idealisations and negative thinking.

“There is an increase in alcohol, cigarette and kava consumption due to worry and stress which has resulted from isolation,
job loss and academic related issues.”

Mr Morgam said in pandemic situations, it was normal for people to feel sad, worried, confused, scared or angry.

He said young people should be encouraged to share their problems with a trusted adult or parents so their mental health could be protected.

“We certainly encourage people to stay connected with families and friends through virtual platforms where available.

“This is also a good time to pick up a new hobby like cooking, reading or drawing and painting.”
