The Vanua Levu Landowners Association says landowners deserved to know the details of a proposed change to the iTaukei Land Trust Board Act.

The Bill, No 17 of 2021 now before Parliament, seeks ‘to remove the requirement of obtaining the consent of the iTaukei Land Trust Board for any mortgage, charge, pledge or caveat on a lease or for any such lease to be dealt with by any court of law or under the process of any court of law’.

“At least enlighten the landowners about processes and details involved in this proposed change so we can better understand and work on from there,” said association president Tevita Raiova.

He said this as he called for consultation over Government’s proposed changes to the Bill.

“I agree with the Government that changes need to happen with the Land Acts of 1940 to suit today’s needs and development pace. But for these changes to happen, we need to be consulted first as landowners so we know exactly the details and the purpose of this amendment.

“If it benefits us, that’s good but as long as there is consultation and the voices of the landowners are heard.”
