THE fourth prosecution witness in the trial of former diplomat and media relations officer of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Kamlesh Arya, today informed the court that school heads and managers were familiar with how they used the free education grant.

In her evidence, prosecution witness Makereta Fuata who was an accounts officer at the Ministry of Education said the heads of schools and its managers had been giving a set of procedure to follow when they utilised the free education grant.

She said the ministry also conducted workshops for heads of schools and its managers to assist them and to also familiarise them on the directions and procedures they must follow when they use the free education grant.

Mr Arya is charged with a count each of abuse of office and general dishonesty causing a loss.

It is alleged that Mr Arya, while acting as the school manager of Bhawani Dayal Memorial Primary School, authorised the free education grant worth $116,500 as loans.

The alleged incident took place between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2014.

The trial will continue at the High Court in Suva next Tuesday.
