Arson cause of 58pc fires

Fifty-eight per cent fires of Fiji Pine forests in October was because of arson, the company said in a social media post.

It said of the 17 fires recorded in October, 10 were deliberately lit.

On October 26, Fiji Pine reported five fires in its forests in Nadi, all listed as arson resulting the damage of 62.7 hectares of trees.

Similarly, three cases of arson were reported in Bua with two fires deliberately lit on October 13 and one on October 25.

One case of arson was reported from the Lololo Pine Forest on October 10 with the fire deliberately lit outside of the company boundary, said Fiji Pine Ltd.

The company said pine forest fires led to loss of plantation and resulted in lesser or no returns to landowners in the areas.
