CATHOLIC schools are an integral part of the evangelising mission of the Catholic Church.

This was highlighted by the head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong during the Education Sunday mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva yesterday.

He said this was one of the defining characteristics of Catholic schools.

“Right from the beginning the church saw education as an important part of the mission of the church of changing our mindset,” he said in his homily during yesterday’s mass.

“We’re not only about our Catholic faith but we want to bring up excellent education.”

Archbishop Chong said while the church upheld faith, it also wanted good grades to be produced in Catholic schools.

“We are about good grades, but more than that. Our Catholic education is committed to the whole development of our children.”

He also said that as the Archbishop of the Church here in Fiji, he played a vital part in promoting and supporting the Catholic character of education.

“So this year, given the challenges we’ve been having with the education policy and all that’s going on, and just a historical transition that’s going through education, we will hold some very important meetings on Catholic education this year so that I as Bishop can fulfil my role of protecting and promoting Catholic education so that we can continue to deliver what has been a history and a very important part of our mission.”
