THE Fijian Elections Office has shifted from the traditional means of announcing election results to its very own app for the 2018 General Election.

The app will feature election results for each candidate, political party and the polling venue.

Electoral Commission chairperson Suresh Chandra said this showed how the FEO was using modern technology as a useful tool for electoral management.

“This innovation is in line with the best practices which the FEO has always aspired to and exemplifies our efforts to always strive for the best in the service delivery of all Fijians by moving away from the old elections practices to the new elections,” Mr Chandra said.

Supervisor of Elections Mohameed Saneem said the results released from the app were from the results management system.

“The results app only gives the results that have already been entered into the results management system, this is not for data entry from the field, this is only a display at the end of line of the results that have already been complied in the results management system,” Mr Saneem said.

Mr Chandra said this showed that FEO would ensure the transparency of electoral processes during the election period.

“FEO has also shown time and again that modernising and adopting technology advancements will not help improve the delivery but also boost the transparency process,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission director Ashwin Raj said the launch of the results app attested to the level of transparency that was expected of the FEO in providing access for all Fijians.

He said this would empower citizens in terms of the access being given.

“You can always access these applications, access the stats that is required to be able to contest some of the claims or be able to ascertain the veracity of the claims all in all Fijian Elections office and the Electoral Commission need to be commended,” Mr Raj said.

The app can now be downloaded via Google Play Store and App Store.
