FIJI Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA) is now negotiating with Australian Customs to develop a mobile phone software application to track yachts entering the country.
This was revealed by FRCA’s director revenue management, Kumar Sami Goundar, during a presentation to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs yesterday.
Mr Goundar said one of the challenges faced by the Fiji Customs was the monitoring of yachts. They anticipate piloting the new project by January next year.
“Once it works out well, we will have that software. We will provide our officers with smartphones and even the villages or the district officers in the outer islands so that whatever information they get, they can take a picture of that yacht and send that information to our Customs Network System so all the data will be saved in that system,” Mr Goundar said.
The system, he said, would be accessible to all their officers.
“It’s very hard to monitor the yachts, but we are now empowering district officers to report to police or our compliance and investigation section.”
