An amendment to the Employments Relations Bill was tabled in parliament today which may see the reduction in family care leave and paternity leave days from five to two days.
Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said those people who have already taken more than two days will not be affected by this.
“If somebody has already taken five days of family care leave, just because it is now removed to two, does not mean they have to pay back for the three days. They have taken it that’s fine. Workers who have already used two days of the Family Care leave will not be able to take an added two or three days of the Family Care Leave during the COVID-19 period,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
He said this is an interim measure and leave days will normalise once the pandemic is over.
“After the COVID-19 period ends, workers entitlement to family care and paternity leaves will resume as normal.”
Parliament is expected to debate on the proposed bill this afternoon.
