Ambassador Khan highlights significance of justice in national climate policies

THE significance of inclusivity and justice in national climate policies and the transformational nature of human rights were highlighted by the Fijian Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan.

Ambassador Khan who was invited to speak to youths leaders from civil society organisations in an interactive session provided an opportunity for the youths to learn more about Fiji’s role at the UN Human Rights Council.

She spoke on the importance of promoting coherence between development and human rights of the interdependence of civil and political rights.

Fiji is the first Pacific island nation elected to the UNHRC, the world’s foremost body in protecting and promoting human rights.

Ambassador Khan highlighted the significance of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of the Human Rights Council, and of the importance of the roles of civil society and the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission in Fiji’s UPR process.
