‘Amazing game of cricket’: Kane Williamson’s reaction to Australia v India stunner

Listen to this article:

Black Caps coach Gary Stead and captain Kane Williamson are still in with a chance of taking their side to the inaugural World Test Championship final.

It’s fair to say Kane Williamson wasn’t engaging in a late night session with the calculator on Tuesday.

After all, the Black Caps captain is taking all the sleep he can get at the moment, being a new father.

So, in the wake of India’s stunning series-clinching win over Australia at the Gabba and the complexities that come with it for New Zealand’s hopes of making the inaugural World Test Championship final, Williamson was happy to shoulder arms to all the equations swirling in the air when asked on Wednesday morning how he now sees his team placed for a return to Lord’s in June.

“I don’t know off the top of my head… it’s a bit of a mathematical thing, and things that we can’t control,” he said at Seddon Park prior to training with the Knights, who he will return for in the Super Smash on Thursday night.

“I know there’s a number of scenarios in other games that have some sort of impact on us, however just watching it from a cricketing fan’s perspective and seeing a little bit of the end there, it was an amazing game of cricket, an incredible series.

“We certainly know how hard it is going over to Australia, they’re a formidable side. And so are India, and they had such a number of injuries, and to show their depth and keep competing right till the end and come away with the series win is very special for that side.”

The Black Caps now face an anxious couple of months to see how things shake down, both on the field and off it in this Covid-hit calendar, to see if the cards fall their way when Australia tour South Africa and India host England.

“Personally, I try not to get too carried away with supporting one or the other, let them play their cricket and see what happens,” Williamson said.

“With the cricket that we played and the opportunity that we had here to push our case, that’s all we could do.
