High Court in Suva judge Justice Daniel Goundar has revealed that a 38-year-old man accused of harming his two young children by setting his house on fire in Nadera in June this year suffered from mental illness because of substance abuse.

The matter involving Pranil Alvin Singh was called yesterday at the High Court in Suva.

Mr Singh is charged with one count of arson and two counts of attempted murder.

Justice Goundar said according to the accused’s psychiatric evaluation report, Mr Singh was fit to plea and stand trial and that he was aware of his actions during the alleged incident.

Justice Goundar said the report also stated that it could not rule out the use of illicit drugs before the alleged crime.

The case has been adjourned to July 27 for plea.
