All set in HK

THE Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team have lifted its preparations as it targets to create history at this weekend’s Hong Kong 7s.

The side had a scrimmage session with the Hong Kong 7s team at the Hong Kong Sports Institute on Saturday focusing on their attack.

Coach Gareth Baber said he had his players work on their attack and defence mechanism before their first match against Samoa on Friday.

“We were working getting in depth with our attacking skills which worked well and also the defensive side of the game which we made sure to keep our connection intact,” he said.

‘We had also worked on our communication skills so that it goes in line with what we wanted to do on our attack which is going to be a big element when we take on big teams this weekend.

“We also need to come in strong and in force in contact areas making good tackles low binding tackles to avoid any disciplinary actions which we all came through it during our recovery session after the game,” he said.

With five days to go for the big 7s tournament five boys had contracted flu but had recovered well and continued training.

French-based player Semi Kunatani has joined the side which is another boost to the squad,” Baber said.

“We’re training well and we’re enjoying the food and the facilities at the institute.”

The team continue its community work with the Hong King Rugby Union which will be good for the boys to get to see Hong Kong.

“It is a good thing for them to absorb other cultures because it is a big element in developing the players.

“Things are going on positively as we expected and we had a lot of things to work on and we remain positive as well.”
