Men need to seek psychological counselling if they find themselves in a challenging situation affecting them mentally during this COVID-19 pandemic, says Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) coordinator Shamima Ali.

She made this statement in response to statistics released by Lifeline Fiji that there were 47 suicide cases recorded between January and July this year, of which 36 were males and 11 females.

She said some men were reluctant to seek help.

“We also find that men are very reluctant to seek help, especially older men – men in their 40s, 50s, 60s and so on,” Ms Ali said.

She said it had always been the case that men recorded the highest number of suicide cases in Fiji even before the COVID-19 pandemic because women were more resilient when faced with challenges.

“It has always been the trend pre-COVID where more males were committing suicide than females.

“For the work that we do at FWCC, we have a gendered perspective, that means looking at the role men and women play.”
