GOVERNMENT has spent more than $250million on rehabilitating schools that were damaged or destroyed by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston, says Education Minister Rosy Akbar.

She said this while speaking at the commissioning of the $3.2m rehabilitation of Penang Sangam Primary and Penang Sangam High schools, Rakiraki, which was financed by the Indian government.

“To date, the Fijian Government alone has spent more than $250m for rehabilitation works in our schools and that is a lot,” Ms Akbar said.

“The whole idea behind that is to build back better.”

Ms Akbar said assessments conducted in the wake of Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston revealed that a lot of school infrastructure was below the required standard and some were in dire need of refurbishment.

She thanked the Indian government’s commitment to support the Fijian Government’s Adopt-a-School program.

Among the schools adopted by the Indian government were — Koronubu Sanatan, Nakauvadra High, Naviti District, Navunisea District, Nukuloa College, Vatuloa Sanatan Dharm, Penang Sangam Primary, Penang Sangam High, Rakiraki Public, Ratu Apenisa Memorial, Sarava Sanatan Dharm, Shasti Memorial, Solevu Catholic, Vunidawa SD Primary, Vunisamaloa Sangam, Wainibuka District and Wainibuka Junior Secondary.
