Aid for safe navigation

THE provision of constructing aids to navigation (ATONs) to assist in the safe navigation of vessels within Fiji’s identified shipping lanes continues.

Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) acting chief executive officer Captain Philip Hill confirmed this and said Government had progressively constructed 35 lighthouses from 2011 to date, including the installation of 600 beacons in the sheltered shipping routes.

Capt Hill said Government invested a total of $7.1 million for lighthouses and $1.8 million for beacons.

He said a further seven lighthouses were planned for installation this year.

“Fijians rely heavily on the maritime shipping industry for employment, sustainability, prosperity and economic growth,” he said.

Capt Hill added it was through the shipping industry that Fijians in the rural and maritime sectors were provided with government development initiatives and enhanced social and economic growth.

“I urge every stakeholder to work in collaboration with MSAF and Government in ensuring the betterment of our local shipping industry which in turn will bring about a better future for all shipping stakeholders and the nation as a whole.”
