FIJI’S Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy says his ministry will expand kava cultivation to the Western Division.

He made the comment at a talanoa session in Rakiraki yesterday.

Dr Reddy said he would announce plans soon on how this would happen.

He said the ministry was going to revamp research stations in the country.

“You will hear about a dedicated research station for kava and our plan for expanding kava growth and production outside the traditional kava area.”

He said Taveuni, Kadavu, Naitasiri and Cakaudrove were areas where kava was planted presently.

“But we want to spread kava outside the traditional areas and to do that, we have to establish an infrastructure in the Western Division.”

Dr Reddy said kava cultivation would take place in areas that had cooler weather.

“We will look at the interior of the West. Nadarivatu is one place but we need shade there.”
