Age is just a number

TURNING 60 will not be a barrier for Dhansukh Lal, who is also known as Dee Lal as he prepares for the 2019 Island Chill Suva Marathon.

Lal lives in New Zealand. He lists running as a hobby because he runs to maintain her health and also to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.

“I will be turning 60 on November 5 this year, and I have a goal to run at least one half-marathon in the country of my birth which is Fiji,” he said.

“This run in Suva will fulfil my dream and goal.

I represented Natabua High School during my high school days in the 400 metres, 800m and 1500m.

After leaving high school I joined Lautoka Hash Harriers Club for some time, but never took running seriously.

“I started in long-distance running about four years ago with a lot of motivation and encouragement from Ashok Kumar who was a former Fiji representative.

“I appreciate Ashok’s effort in getting me into long-distance running.

I was determined to at least complete one half-marathon in 2016 and since then I have not looked back.”

In 2016, 2017 and 2018, he took part in the half-marathon at the Auckland Run in the City Marathon over the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

He has also taken part in the West Auckland Run, Howick Fun Run and Highbrook Fun Run as a buildup to the half-marathon.

“I run every morning for about six to seven kilometres and on Saturday run about 14 kilometres.

I am on the road about 5.30am in the Auckland cold weather.

Recently the Auckland weather has not been good for going out to run.

The other challenge for me is work commitments.

“This competition brings the best in a person.

A person has to be determined to compete and need to have dedication to train and also have discipline to have a routine in training.

“The three Ds – determination, dedication and discipline are my key to success.”

He said it was important to have a healthy lifestyle, especially in New Zealand because cost of medical services was expensive here.

“I have been a vegetarian for more than 18 years and I don’t drink any alcohol nor smoke.

My diet is simply vegetables, rice and bread with some sweets.
