AFL Fiji looks to provide more opportunities for women to participate in the sport and also assist in their development.
Coach and development manager Simon Highfield said they were working in partnership with the national AFL team, which was currently ranked fifth in the world.
“We have a group of coaches looking to work with all girls under-15 coaches which includes 2017 captain Ilisapeci Vateitei, vice-captain and World Team member Litia Matanisigadrau along with fellow World Team member Matelita Tuilevuka and former captain Siteri Tadrau,” Highfield said.
He said all were welcomed in joining their newly opened academy called, ‘The Fiji Vonu Academy’.
“The aim is not only to grow the sport and provide opportunities for women, but also ensure we have a talent pathway towards the World Cup in 2020.
“The academy, as well as learning the skills of the sport, will participate in leadership activities, capacity building, and work towards a representative game at this year’s Oceania Cup, in December.”
He said members of their academy would also be playing and training in partnership with the Fiji U15 AFL teams.
