THE statement by the Opposition Leader Sitiveni Rabuka on the alleged assault of Opposition MP Pio Tikoduadua by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was neutral.

This was revealed in the Parliamentary Privileges Committee’s verbatim report on September 3 by Opposition MP Adi Litia Qionibaravi.

While distinguishing between the statements by the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mr Rabuka, Adi Litia said Mr Rabuka did not take sides when he made his statement about the alleged assault case.

However, she said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was supporting the view that there wasn’t any assault. “He (Mr Rabuka) was speaking as a neutral, independent person, he did not take sides between the two persons as against the honourable Attorney-General, I think he was clearly supporting the view that there was not any assault or something like that, I am not too sure now,” she said.

“But I think, if we check the records, his statement clearly shows that he was in support of the other party.”

Government minister and Privileges Committee member Dr Mahendra Reddy said Mr Rabuka and Mr Sayed-Khaiyum could not be not be part of the committee because they had both made statements about the alleged incident.

“There was an objection, there was a letter written by SODELPA as well as NFP that the honourable Attorney-General cannot be in the committee given that he has given a statement and therefore, from their point of view, that he has compromised himself.

“In the same manner, he has also done it.

If that is to be taken and that they believe that, that is ground for the honourable Attorney-General not to be in this committee, then in the same manner, honourable Rabuka should not be in this committee.”
